Kaia Gerber’s rise to fame

Kaia Gerber’s rise to fame

As the off-spring of supermodel Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber gives the phrase “model child” a whole new meaning. Quite literally following in her mother’s footsteps, Gerber hit the catwalk just four days after turning 16 – the legal catwalk age – debuting at Calvin Klein.

Even though it is her first fashion week stint, Gerber has already racked up an enviable fashion CV. Acting as a refresher to a catwalk otherwise dominated by the same faces, Gerber demonstrated her dominance by walking at a host of the biggest shows.

Gerber’s omnipresence this autumn is no surprise given the flurry of prestigious designers she has walked for in her first season, opening for Alexander Wang and hitting Marc Jacobs SS18 after being a long-term muse for his perfume Daisy. Keeping it short and sweet when crossing the pond to London – somewhere it is notoriously hard for “it” girls to crack – Gerber participated in the Burberry show with model brother Presley.

Coming from a generation of girls, such as Gigi, Bella and Kendall, who emphasise a change in the industry where their careers have been birthed by social media and fashion’s nepotism, it is clear Kaia is fashion’s new wonder, already holding 2.1m followers on Instagram.

Despite this it is Milan that really cemented her status as the most in demand model of the moment. The 16-year-old sported her most dramatic looks yet at prestigious Fendi, Prada and Moschino reinforcing herself as fashions new phenomena.

Having previously graced the covers of international magazines such as Love, Pop and Teen Vogue, it would be easy to mistake Gerber for her mother, circa 1992. It’s clear good genes run in the family with Gerber inheriting Crawford’s strong bone structure, timeless beauty and bold brows.

Genes, however, are not the only thing the mother daughter-duo share. Both Gerber and her mother took to the Versace catwalk to pay homage to Gianni Versace’s life with Versace sculpting both models gold outfits and Crawford closing the show with five of her contemporaries in a dazzling showcase.

Polishing off the month in Paris with an equally impressive array of shows, Kaia made her first appearance at Saint Lauren going on to Bottega Veneta, Valentino and Chloe where new designer Natacha Ramsay-Levi also made her debut. But, in what was perhaps her crowning moment, Gerber opened esteemed Chanel in a waterfall set that will be as hard to forget as the model’s own face.

In spite of her young age, Kaia Gerber proved she has what it takes to match her mother’s legacy. One thing is for sure, Gerber is making waves in the fashion industry: watch this space.
