Grammy Awards 2018: Red carpet
If there is an industry where flamboyant and creative dress is not only approved, but encouraged, it’s the Grammys. The Oscars of the music world, it’s where the biggest and best names of the year come together to celebrate the last year.
Winning an award isn’t the only way to grab attention, music moguls use the occasion to amp up the competition in the fashion stakes too. In the past the red carpet has played host to some of Lady Gaga’s wackiest designs, Beyonce’s most iconic looks and even Katy Perry’s blue hair. This year, however, the guests took a more refined, glamorous approach.
Arguably the best dressed of the bunch, Lana Del Rey floated down the carpet like a celestial goddess. Wearing a custom Gucci gown, the musical beauty renowned for her retro tastes was draped in nude fabric, adorned with silver embellishments, similar to sparkling stars. Reminiscent of old-school Hollywood glamour, the Summertime Sadness singer wore a corsage on her wrist, diamante chain draped down her décolletage and a headpiece giving the impression of a halo of stars – dreamy.
While she might have skipped the red carpet at the Grammys, New Zealand popstar Lorde’s Valentino gown still deserves some attention. With the addition of a vintage inspired silhouette including sweetheart neckline and flared skirt, the starlet stunned. Unusually, Lorde has a feminist quote sown into the back of her dress from artist Jenny Holzer in support of the Time’s Up protest.
You may be more familiar with seeing this star on the cinema screen, but over the last year this actress-come-singer has been making big waves on the music scene with her poptastic tunes. Contrasting her classic Alexander Vaultaire white gown and bronzed make-up with knee-high holographic purple boots, Steinfeld documented a more grown-up look.
Her career may have launched in Britain, but this babe is big across the pond. Rita Ora attended the event held at Madison Square Gardens in a Ralph & Russo design featuring a daring split up one thigh. The most eye catching of all however, was the sparkles complimenting the figure-hugging dress and the addition of a white rose in support of the Time’s Up campaign.
Although he attended the event without his long-term partner and supermodel Gigi Hadid, the ex-member of One Direction still made an impact. Showcasing his on-point personal style, Zayn rocked up to the awards in a blush suit that no doubt made all the girls and boys swoon. Add an embroidered white rose on his lapel and Gucci loafers, what more could you ask for?
Proving that girls can wear suits too, Eve’s walk down the red carpet was a lesson on how androgynous cuts can be feminine and powerful too. Take away the undershirt to give a sexy cleavage, add an on-trend wide leg and a simple striped diamond design and hey presto!
If you haven’t heard, Miley Cyrus is back with a style that is less Wrecking Ball and even less Disney that was perfectly documented by the two outfits she wore at the 2018 Grammys. The first being a stylish, sophisticated and understated Jean-Paul Gaultier jumpsuit which let her white rose accessory do the talking. Later, she joined the stage with Elton John in a ruby-red princess gown by Zac Posen that proved grown-up Miley is here.
If anyone knows how to do retro glamour it is Elton John – add Gucci and it is a match made in heaven! The musical icon wore a tux adorned with gold, blue and red sequins in an art deco design finished with a black shirt with pussy bow. Extra wow factor was added with his accessories such as his “ELTON” jewelled knuckle duster and glittering shades that are soon to be seen everywhere.
Standing out in the sea of black suits, Sam Smith wore an emerald green, double-breasted Carruti 1881 suit. If that wasn’t daring enough, the singer incorporated a maroon tee into the mix to show he knows exactly how to add subtle touches to an otherwise classic cut.
Arguably the best dressed couple to attend, the duo both looked glamorous within their own rights. While Legend worse a classic Burberry tux, he exuded sophisticated and let his wife be the star of the show. The Lip Sync Battle presenter wore head to toe silver sequined material that perfectly draped her ever-growing bump.
