Laurence & Chico autumn/winter 2018 collection presentation for NYFW
Guests lined up in anticipation of the Laurence and Chico’s fall 2018 presentation at Pier 59 Studios. The packed house enjoyed a high energy presentation complete with over the top styling. The fantasy collection pulled references from heritage brands like Chanel and McQueen then turned them upon their heads in a presentation where the Mad Hatter would feel at home.
The pearl details that have been so popular in ready to wear the past few seasons where present albeit on steroids along with a bold purple check and quilted fabrics seemed Chanelesque. Proportions were extreme with furry caps, sleeping bag style quilting, and layered capes.
There were several cheeky slogans on graphic sweaters saying things like “groom me”, “feed me”, and “walk me” seemed to hint at unseen pets-along with pearl leashes some of which were attached to ottomans with faux fur. While some of the more over the top looks were best suited to the runway, these more casual looks have great retail appeal.
The makeup and styling was an integral part of the presentation. Whereas many designers this season seem to be keeping their hair and makeup minimal as not to distract from the garments, Laurence & Chico went the opposite direction creating a makeup look reminiscent of the Red Queen from Alice and Wonderland effectively doubling down on their over the top looks. Bold bright colours and “glasses” made from pearls attached directly to the models’ faces.
For such a young brand Laurence and Chico seem to have cultivated a fearless esthetic that is sometimes lacking in the ready to wear shows. It will be interesting to see how the brand develops over the next few seasons.
