Outdoor events not to miss this spring
It’s official: spring has finally sprung. And what better way to celebrate than by getting out into the great outdoors for a long-overdue dose of vitamin D. Here is our selection of some of the best events around the UK to help shake off the winter chill and welcome in the new season.
RHS Orchid and Plant show 6th – 7th April
As part of a series of shows held by the Royal Horticultural Society, Lindley Hall will be hosting a display of exotic orchids and colourful floral arrangements. There will also be a range of talks from expert speakers, as well as a painting masterclass delivered by the Chelsea School of Botanical Art.
The Grand National 12th – 14th April
It’s nearly that time of year again when the Grand National comes galloping full speed around the corner. The annual horse race – held at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool – is sure to have even newcomers to the sport on their feet for several days of hair-raising jumps and exhilarating finishes.
The London Marathon 22nd April
Whether you are a participant or a supporter, the London Marathon is an event that is sure to instil in you a sense of national pride. Weaving across the capital, the endurance challenge will see thousands of runners – both amateur and professional – push themselves to the limit in order to raise money for charity or attain a personal best. As the cheers of onlookers and the sheer variety of fancy dress costumes prove, the Marathon is less a competition, more a fun community collaboration.
Food Festival 5th – 7th May
If you love food and you love history, why not experience the best of both worlds by visiting the Weald and Downland Living Museum, where there will be an assortment of locally sourced produce and cooking demonstrations, celebrity and local chefs, plus historic food and drink – all accompanied (should you so desire) by a refreshing pint. You don’t get more British than that.
St Ives Literature Festival 12th – 19th May
If you find yourself down in sunny Cornwall this May, be sure to check out the St Ives Literature Festival. Set in the idyllic backdrop of a colourful fishing town, the small event celebrates art of all forms, featuring poetry, book readings, live music and even comedy performances. And once you are done, why not grab some fish and chips (if the seagulls don’t grab it first).
