McQueen premiere: A chat with directors, family and friends about the man behind the iconic brand
Last night, we took to the red carpet at the premiere of highly anticipated documentary McQueen, where we caught up with the filmmakers behind the project and chatted to friends and family of the late designer.
The feature itself is a very intimate exploration of the eponymous fashionista which aims to reflect the eccentric originality and untamed beauty of his iconic design. Exploring Alexander [Lee] McQueen’s personal and professional lives, both tormented and revolutionary, the film tells an inspiring rags-to-riches story, celebrating the figure’s groundbreaking and influential work through an inspirational modern-day fairy tale.
We heard from directors Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui as they explained how their movie reveals the fun side of Lee and his creative journey which is often obscured by his overwhelming professional success.
Sister Janet McQueen and nephew Gary McQueen shared their memory of Lee and recalled how they realised he would become a big thing in fashion with the packed Dante show at Spitalfieds’s Christ Church.
Former assistant Sebastian Pons told us about his professional relationship with Lee and the point at which he realised he was going to change fashion forever.
Mimma Viglezio from Show Studio also shared her memories of Lee, stressing his impact on the fashion industry.
