Five mobile games to look out for in 2020
Though the most visually impressive games of 2020 will undoubtedly be those released solely on consoles, the most innovative are set to be those that have been created or adapted for smartphones. Despite the limitations of this lightweight, compact hardware, mobile technology is becoming more and more powerful, with interactive features and augmented reality – not to mention the upcoming launch of cloud-gaming service Google Stadia – elevating apps into a new age of portable software. There’s a whole new world of concepts and keywords to get used to, depending on what game you are playing. Here are some of the mobile games worth looking out for come the new year.
Stranger Things
Fans of Netflix’s hit TV show will be pleased to hear that next year they will be able to enter the 80s-inspired world on their mobiles. The release, accessible on Android and iOS, is not to be mistaken for Stranger Things 3: The Game, which launched back in August after the show’s third season. This new title employs augmented reality, enabling you to explore the Upside Down whilst in the real world. Much like Pokemon Go, users can interact with the game whilst on their daily travels, but of course, Stranger Things will have a darker and more nostalgic vibe.
Pokemon Sleep
As other developers model their games on one of the most viral Pokemon games, Nintendo has now moved onto another level of interactive mobile play with Pokemon Sleep. With their trademark eccentricity, they have announced a new game which tracks the sleep pattern of users and then allows them to “wake up with Pokemon every morning”. Perhaps not strictly necessary, but it could make for an intriguing experience come 2020.
Super Meat Boy Forever
Speaking of strange innovations from Nintendo, 2020 holds even more surreal treasures with the release of Super Meat Boy Forever. Though it was originally planned as a mobile version of the Super Meat Boy, it has now been developed into a full sequel, bringing back the same bizarre cast of characters from the original to continue their adventure, but also packing some new surprises.
League of Legends: Wild Rift
Riot Games have announced that League of Legends: Wild Rift will be coming to Android and iOS next year. This new version of the multiplayer online battle arena video game will look much the same as the original, but will feature a new map and the option of shorter matches (between 15 and 20 minutes) and a twin-stick control system.
Marvel’s Avengers
Though it won’t be available on all phones, Marvel’s Avengers will be coming to Google Stadia next year. After the dramatic and slightly devastating conclusion of the film series, followers of the franchise will be able to reconnect with their favourite heroes once more, this time in a world where the heroes have become outlawed after the death of civilians. Google are set to launch their new platform in November, from which point only Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a (3a, 3a XL, 3, 3XL) will be able to run the software. However, the tech giant will presumably be looking to expand this compatibility as time goes on.
