The greatest natural disaster movies of all times
It’s always a good time to watch a natural disaster movie. If you are passionate about apocalypse movies, then you may be looking for lists of the greatest natural disaster films of all times. Well, the following ones are spectacular and terrifying, but they are only stories.
Disaster movies are some of the oldest genres because from the oldest time people have always wondered what natural disaster can be so harmful to wipe out the entire humankind. Because we decided to make a top of the best natural disaster movies, we will exclude the ones featuring aliens and fantastic creatures. Godzilla and King Kong are interesting but they’re part of another article. And no, this article won’t include any superheroes.
So, let’s explore our favourite natural disaster movies.
2012
It’s almost 2020, so we are no longer afraid that this movie predicts an apocalypse, but it’s a script with great chances to turn true at a certain moment in the future. 2012 it’s a star-studded movie, and it beautifully throws back to the one filmed in 1970. The movie follows a frustrated writer struggling to keep his family alive during multiple natural catastrophes.
Dr Adrian Helmsley investigates the effect of solar storms on the earth and discovers that the planet’s core is heating up. He tries to save the human race by warning the US president Thomas Wilson. He states that certain preparations can prevent natural disasters from killing the entire race. Somehow, Jackson Curtis, the frustrated writer finds out the same information, and he tries to take his family to an ark designed to save people from the apocalypse. The movie shows his family struggles to get to the ark.
The Day After Tomorrow
This movie won 1 BAFTA Film Award so it’s worth including it on your To Watch List. It follows the story of Jack Hall, a paleoclimatologist who works in Antarctica. He discovers that an enormous ice sheet sheared off, and it endangers the planet. He cannot predict the effects and massive climate changes this natural disaster has. His son Sam travels to New York with his friends to attend an event, and he has no idea what is about to happen.
After three days of continuous rain and numerous weather-related disasters around the world, people understand the planet is about to experience another Ice Age. And even if we love the movies, it would be terrifying for the world to enter Ice Age again because the humankind would have low chances to survive and adapt. The movie shows how people try to reach the warmer climate regions located in the south of the planet. Jack tries to save his son and his friends and take them to a safe shelter.
San Andreas
The biggest earthquake in the history shakes San Andreas, a city from California. The charming Dwayne Johnson plays Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department is caught in the middle of the disaster. Ray, his daughter Blake, and his estranged wife Emma try to avoid the effects of the earthquake.
The movie is wonderfully directed, and it’s important to note that most of the actors did their own stunts. The movie is filled with suspense scenes, so be prepared for your adrenaline to spike its highest levels. Fans state that this movie delivers the script of a possible natural disaster that can destroy the planet. The movie doesn’t exaggerate the action which is quite rare for natural disaster films. No Jumaji scenes here for the Rock.
Geostorm
If someone would tell you that the network of satellites created to protect the Earth starts to attack it, you would probably tell them it’s a great script for a movie. Well, Geostorm is that movie, and Gerard Butler plays a major role.
Geostorm shows how catastrophic climate change is for people. Governments are powerless when nature hits. If a storm would hit your city today would you survive it? Is your house able to face it? It would be smart if homeowners would protect their houses with flood insurance because a storm like the one shown in Geostorm would probably destroy all houses, no matter how well-built there are.
The world’s governments designed the Dutch Boy program that launched satellites to create a net around the world with the purpose to surround the planet and protect it from climate change. The bad part is that these satellites have technologies that would become a threat to the world if someone would hack them. Surprising, something bad happens and the satellites strike the planet with all their force. Who can save the world when the satellites designed to protect the Earth attack it? It looks like two estranged brothers are the heroes of the day.
The Wandering Earth
You may have heard that the Sun, the white star that warms our planet is dying. The Wandering Earth was created on the idea that as the Sun is dying out people have to find ways to survive. This movie promotes a solution. People created planet thrusters to move humans away from the planet to a new start system. The action is set in 2500, and it shows the struggles and dangers a team of young people faces when they try to save humanity from a planet with no chance of survival. The movie seen screen in 2019 so it’s no surprise that its CGI effects are better than the ones from other natural disaster movies.
