Grey Daze – Amends: A raw and fitting tribute to Chester Bennington
After over two decades, alt rock band Grey Daze, fronted by the late Chester Bennington, have released their newest album, Amends. Having reached a peak in popularity during the 90s (before Bennington sang for Linkin Park), Grey Daze now returns to honour the late singer, crafting a bittersweet tribute to the iconic vocalist. Taking some of their most distinctive tracks and remastering instrumentals, Amends celebrates the singer’s raw talent and early beginnings through a mature and emotional composition of tracks.
The 11-track album features never before heard instrumentals with pre-recorded vocals from Bennington, who had always planned for the band’s reunion. Although it was put on hold after his sudden passing, Grey Daze’s passion for completing the project has created a dynamic album centred around songwriting and Bennington’s distinct vocals. The collection of tracks such as Sickness and B12 perfectly showcases his signature blend of soft melodies with powerful harsh vocals. Amends proves a nostalgic experience, evoking the memory of one of the 2000s’ most memorable rock vocalists, but also a deeply touching one, reflecting on his life’s work at its beginning.
Amends, despite being comprised of re-recorded original material, paints a portrait of Bennington as a man meditating on his life and experiences, particularly his regrets. The effect is both chilling and powerful, given the late’s singer’s struggles with depression. Through a cohesive lyrical concept, the album is a personal journey through Bennington’s heart and soul. Morei Sky and Sometimes produce an atmospheric, sorrowful environment in which the vocals can flourish. Past the band’s more notable tracks Sickness and B12, closer Shouting Out provides a somewhat cathartic duet to the often emotional listening experience offered throughout the album.
Despite the album’s monotonous instrumentals, Amends proves a strong feature in the band’s discography. The album is well structured and obviously crafted with love and respect for Bennington, making it a sincere and fitting tribute for the late singer.
