Five fashion tips for autumn/winter
With autumn well and truly here and winter fast approaching it can be tricky to make weather-ready adjustments to the wardrobe. Autumn weather is very unpredictable, with dark cold mornings to sunny days and chilly nights all in one 24 hour period it requires a lot of forward planning and preparation. Getting used to the lowered temperatures also means getting used to the changing trends that come with it. While fall colours and tones of browns and oranges are a trend year on year, the winter months are more neutral tones, of creams, blacks and greys. But how can some make sure they are ready for anything autumn might throw at them? And what happens when winter finally arrives? Worry no more, here’s a solution for any autumn and winter wardrobe, five fashion tips to battle through the chill and into the colder months.
Layer it up
Autumn and especially winter is all about the layers. When we think of layering we usually go for a base layer, a middle layer and then a top layer. Your base layer usually includes items such as your underwear, tights, a turtle neck or leggings, These are usually items that are practical and are used to add warmth. Tights can also be used as a great way to add prints and texture to your outfit. The middle layer is then added on top of the base layer. This layer is the main base of your outfit such as your top, jeans, dress, skirt etc. This can also be a thick fleece, jumper or knitwear that is great for insulation, this is more beneficial in the winter. Finally, you can then add your top layer. This layer is usually your coat or jacket that serves as a barrier against the elements on a snow day or rainy autumn stroll.
Add some wool
Wool is not only a perfect comfort and cosy fabric, it is also perfect for autumn and winter. This moisture-wicking material is great to keep you warm and dry all day. But wool doesn’t always mean big thick jumpers and cable knits. Merino wool is a great alternative to heavy knitwear. This lightweight wool can be used as a base layer in your fall outfits. Found in styles such as turtlenecks, crewnecks and even socks. Cashmere is also another alternative to wool, with its soft to touch texture and smart finish, it’s perfect to wear in and out of the office.
Pick a statement coat
Coats will be an everyday essential, so why not invest in a great one? A classic wool overcoat, waterproof trench or oversized puffer are styles that come out year after year. But instead of the usual beige, creams and blacks, you may want to try a bold print or check such as houndstooth, tartan check or a bright block colour. A coat is a great way to elevate your outfit and take it to the next level.
Invest in accessories
Investing in your accessories is important if you want to stay warm this winter. A good scarf, hat and gloves can last you years, with many that will always be in fashion. When looking for a scarf you may want to pick something that will add a statement to your outfit such as a bright colour or bold print. Hats are important in trapping the heat that is released from your head and so helps maintain your full body temperature. A beanie is the perfect and practical hat for both keeping you warm and staying on trend. Winter gloves come in a wide range of different fabrics and purposes. A leather glove is a classic and gives a sophisticated edge to any outfit, however these may not be the most practical for warmth or snow days. Instead try a pair that is the perfect fit for you with flexibility to use your fingers. If you are always on your phone then opting for gloves that allow you to touch your phone screen and still use it is a great alternative.
Reuse and repurpose
You can also repurpose your warmer weather favorites for more suitable colder climates. Take your go-to slip dress and add a base layer of a graphic Tee and a pair of tights, add some chunky boots and your winter coat and you’ve got yourself an outfit ready for winter. Or swap out the t-shirt for a simple turtle neck for a dinner time look. A loud print cami dress such as the blue leopard at Dancing Leopard It’s simple to re-wear your summer essentials by adding a base layer and following the easy three layer steps. There’s no need to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe when you can repurpose what you already have.
