The Witcher, Mass Effect and League of Legends: A major moment for game adaptations
During the last decade, we have seen a massive surge in the number of video games and so-called “gamers” in the world. There are plenty of games that particularly manage to capture players’ hearts. The problem, however, is that the games should be more than just video games: it’s fun to explore the different characters and the world they inhabit.
However, in the end, game-play is kind of one-dimensional, and one rarely gets to see and know the characters more deeply. This was at least the case until now. In the last couple of years, fans seen how their favourite video game characters making an entrance onto the big screen.
Games being adapted
Immensely popular video games such as The Witcher and League of Legends have already gotten their TV series adaptations. It has also been reported that the renowned video game series Mass Effect is also about to be adapted for the small screen.
Games and franchises from TV and film can also be adapted for the iGaming industry. Game developers who produce successful online casino table games for providers also turn their hands to producing themed slots too, using licenses from famous franchises.
This is a big step for video games – traditionally it’s the other way around, where video games are adaptations of popular Hollywood movies and TV shows. Here’s a closer look at both the games and shows.
League of Legends
League of Legends was released in 2009 and instantly became a smash hit as one of the first big video games offered for free. The game boasts an impressive 180 million users, which is more than the entire Steam platform.
Many people were sceptical when it was announced that the popular multiplayer game would get a TV adaptation, but it has been incredibly well-received. Season one of the animated show Arcane: League of Legends has received stellar reviews and gained an astonishing 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The hit TV show is gearing up for a second season that will be released sometime in 2022.
The Witcher
The Witcher video game series was initially released in 2007. For those who may not be aware, it’s an action fantasy game series set in a medieval fantasy world. The series is popular with three standalone games, two expansion packs and three spin-off games.
The game got its TV show adaptation on Netflix in 2019, with Hollywood hunk Henry Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia. The show is doing well and just released its second season.
Mass Effect
Mass Effect is another famous video game that was released in 2007. The game is a single-player action role-playing game. There are currently three standalone Mass Effect games, which have been acclaimed by fans and critics alike. And now rumours are buzzing on the Internet that there is a TV adaption on the way.
Interestingly enough, Henry Cavill, the main actor in The Witcher, has thrown his hat into the ring and is willing to participate if the show is done correctly. Cavill is an avid gamer and has enjoyed the trilogy, so seeing him portray a role on the big screen would be exciting.
Conclusion
Both The Witcher and League of Legends have been imperative in successfully creating an excellent bridge between the TV screen and the video game world. The shows are well perceived, and have undoubtedly opened doors for more video game adaptations on the big screen.
