The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent revolves around Nicolas Cage, but it’s definitely not a film reserved for his fans only. It’s a genuinely amusing comedy mingled with action and espionage, with an added meta dimension that saves it from banality and actually intensifies the humour.
Cage plays a fictionalised version of himself. He is a successful actor who is currently out of work and – having accumulated substantial debts – is desperate for his next big role. Feeling hopeless, he reluctantly accepts a gig that involves making an appearance at a billionaire’s birthday party. He gets a lot more than he bargained for when he finds that his host, Javi (Pedro Pascal), is involved in some large-scale criminal activity. When the CIA asks Cage to be their informant and Javi, meanwhile, suggests writing a script together, the actor finds himself in a surreal situation where fiction and reality are blurred.
Tongue-in-cheek references to Cage’s action films and an unlikely bromance between the two protagonists make for an outright hilarious ride. Although the premise seems pretty ludicrous at first, it somehow manages to deliver on many fronts. The movie’s main strength is perhaps its refreshing take on comedy. While it does use standard, familiar action film scenarios, its ironic approach and self-analytical eye as a film about filmmaking mean that it can take advantage of tried-and-tested formulas that provide the thrills, whilst eliciting a continuous stream of laughter by not taking itself too seriously.
The two leads have great chemistry and their performances are impressive as they manage to capture the nuances of their characters’ inner conflicts. The feature pays tribute to Cage’s filmography through several nods to his previous work, but the actor’s reputation benefits more from the self-irony that this is done with rather than the homage itself.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent balances cleverness and self-indulgence but is ultimately a surprisingly satisfying and remarkable comedy.
