Top ten tourist attractions in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is a gem of Europe. Even though it’s small, it has an incredibly rich past and a lot of influence in the region – which is clear to see in its fortifications and castles, and in the impressive architecture of the capital. There is no doubt that Luxembourg had a special role to play in the history of the area, with a few places being now considered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here is a (by no means exhaustive) list of ten favourite tourist attractions in Luxembourg.
Old Town in Luxembourg City
Today the old town of the City of Luxembourg has the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and it has more than earned it! The old neighbourhood remains charming and timeless, with cobblestone streets and old churches, gardens and an atmosphere that not many places, as old as they may be, are able to preserve this well.
Vianden Castle
Vianden Castle has a long history reflected today in the mesh of styles and old fortifications that have been recently restored. Today, it’s open to the public and there is nothing like walking around the towers and fortified medieval walls, almost literally journeying into the past.
Echternach
A great place to visit, this is the oldest town in Luxembourg and it is preserved fantastically. Its history dates back to 698 with a Benedictine monastery that was transformed into an abbey that’s well worth visiting.
Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art
With a strong interest in arts and culture, Luxembourg has a few interesting sites to visit, and the MUDAM is definitely the best, not only in terms of its excellent exhibitions, but also because the building is a work of art in itself. The museum is in the city and easily accessible, with guided tours for those looking to learn more about European modern art.
Beaufort
This is one of the most iconic places for those interested in exploring the impressive castles of Luxembourg. A total must-see for those who want to immerse themselves into the past of the area, there’s not only one but two castles surrounded by a beautiful town with much more to visit.
Take a walking tour in the City of Luxembourg
There’s nothing better than discovering the city while walking with other tourists guided by a local, passionate about their town and their history. Truly, this is a unique way to discover this enchanting locale.
The Bock
This area is a natural fortification used to defend the city in the past. The rocky cliffs were the start of the whole City of Luxembourg. Today, they can be visited by following the maze of tunnels and passages inside the rocky wall. It’s a really interesting way to see the medieval history.
Grand Ducal Palace
A beautiful building in the middle of Luxembourg, the architecture of the palace is part of its charm, and it has a short guard change that attracts some visitors. During the summer, tourists can enjoy tours in the palace, which has been the official city residence of the Grand Ducal family for the last few hundred years.
Larochette
Larochette is a great place to function as the base of a trip around this beautiful country, since it is located in the centre of Luxembourg. This town itself has a lot to offer tourists as well, with charming streets and beautiful medieval houses.
The cathedral of Notre Dame
Built in the 17th century, this is the most interesting (and the only) church to visit in Luxembourg. With a massive organ that still works, and very old catacombs that can be visited, it’s a must for the itinerary.
Getting from airport to accommodation
There are various options to get to one’s accommodation from the airport or back at the end of a trip. Taxis and buses, as well as trains, can get visitors anywhere in Luxembourg and its surrounds. However, there is a smarter, affordable way to do it: door2gate (a smart shuttle to and from Luxembourg Airport) is cheaper, since the ride is shared with other travellers going the same way, and it will take everyone straight to the door of their hotel, and back to the airport at the right time.
