Is a Sausage Party sequel ever going to happen?
Sausage Party was one of the surprise hits of the 2010s. At the time of its release in 2016, it became the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, generating $140 million from a budget of $19 million – and it was also well received by critics.
Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jonah Hill worked together on the story, and Rogen has previously expressed an interest in making a sequel. It’s likely that if he did produce another offering in the series, it would also land well.
An unprecedented smash
When Rogen announced that he was bringing out a parody of Disney and Pixar films for adults, it was met with some scepticism. It was the first ever 3D computer-animated film to receive an R-rating for its language and themes, so it was a considerable gamble for Sony Pictures Releasing. It paid off, though, and has since influenced other movies that follow a similar concept.
The popularity of Sausage Party has lived on in the years since it was released. Indeed, its influence can still be seen in a number of industries (there’s a Sausage Party game, for instance, which can be found at MrQ’s website and is clearly a big draw for players, who are also likely to be enticed by the various online casino promotions on offer).
Because Sausage Party has managed to live on in popular culture for a long time, there has been a lot of talk about how Rogen and co will follow it up. After all, in the modern age when a film or television series is successful, studios usually try to capitalise on it by releasing more related media.
Seth Rogen and animated films
Rogen has often been asked in interviews whether he will follow up Sausage Party with another offer, and the comedian has stated that it’s something they discuss a lot. He pointed out that he and his cowriters opted to change the ending of the original because the scene they had planned had been too final. Instead, they left the possibility of a sequel wide open.
The Pineapple Express star also stated that there could be a change in the formula for the sequel. He suggested that there may be more of a hybrid style, in which animated and live-action elements are integrated. He went on to say that he was interested in making other R-rated animations for adults, and believes there’s a big market for them after the success of Sausage Party. Another possibility is that the movie is turned into a series instead, and released on a streaming platform – which would be fitting with the way modern entertainment is heading.
At the moment, people hoping for a Sausage Party sequel will have to wait a while longer. There has been no official announcement about it yet, but the fact that Rogen has discussed its possibility is promising.
