Cinderella at Theatre Royal Stratford East
With brilliant set design, fun, upbeat songs and a skilled cast, Cinderella is a strong pantomime that manages to conjure up a good feeling throughout. Pantos are often hit-and-miss, but director Eva Sampson has put something together that reminds us of why they are so popular around this time of year – especially with the current economical situation, it’s excellent to be able to switch off and just enjoy some silly fun.
And that’s exactly what this show delivers. Charlotte Espiner provides some costumes that are wonderfully all-over-the-place with bright colours, juxtaposing old and new; and her sets are bombastic, featuring giant sphinxes, neon lights and giant clocks – because, as Caesar reminds us, Romans were particularly known for their giant clocks.
It’s all very daft, as is the general plot. This Cinderella takes place in ancient Egypt – sorry, Stratford East-gypt – and Cinderella (Gracie McGonigal) isn’t the typically sad-faced one from the fairytale, but instead an upbeat goody-two-shoes who wants to persuade her evil stepmother, queen Cleopatra (Gigi Zahir), to be a kinder monarch – obviously to no avail. It’s very different from the original story, as is expected from this kind of event.
In typical panto style, the production features a number of lively songs by Leo Butler and Robert Hyman, as well as the typical fourth wall-breaking jokes that are just as good here as they are in any other panto (Oh, yes they are!). While not every gag works and some jokes might seem a little bit too daring for children, by and large it’s harmless and enjoyable enough.
But it’s the cast who truly make the experience worthwhile: McGonigal’s singing voice is powerful and apt, and she’s charming as the lead; Alex Wadham’s Caesar is hilarious and he has some excellent chemistry with Zahir. But it is especially Zahir who steals the show as Cleopatra – their comedic timing is phenomenal in a manner that simply impresses throughout.
As such, this Cinderella is, as a panto, just pure escapism. With good humour, entertaining songs and a great cast, it’s fantastic for an delightful night out – especially for families with kids.
