Something from Tiffany’s
Something from Tiffany’s provides hope that Hollywood may be on the cusp of a romcom renaissance, ignited by the charm of Rosaline. Based on the novel of the same name by Melissa Hill, the film uses typical clichés of the genre, specifically notes from the likes of Enchanted, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and 27 Dresses.
Rachel (Zoey Deutch) is in an uncertain relationship with boyfriend of three years Gary Wilson (Ray Nicholson) when a small incident occurs resulting in a mixup of bags and presents swapped between him and Ethan (Kendrick Sampson). With excessive use of coincidences to really push the narrative of its protagonists being meant-to-be, Something from Tiffany’s plays with the question of settling comfortably in a familiar relationship versus the chase for true love. All of this is wrapped in the trappings of Christmas magic and the wintery setting of New York City.
Deutch is absolutely charming, throwing herself into the role with every layer of emotion that Rachel is feeling – from hesitance about the trajectory of her relationship with Gary, to genuine frustration hidden beneath an uncomfortable smile in her effort to make everything work. The chemistry between Deutch and Sampson is passable, while she and Nicholson struggle to evoke any kind of intrigue. This works in the feature’s favour as it helps emphasise the budding romance between Ethan and Rachel.
While it’s a story many will have seen a million times before, there’s enough in this picture to invest in. The two leads and most of the supporting cast are likeable, and the flow of events easily pulls viewers in with each comedic step and every little conflict, wrapping them up in the storyline. Small details help propel the narrative, such as the engagement ring being too loose on Rachel’s finger and her constant fiddling with it to highlight her uncertainty about the prospect of marrying Gary.
Visually, it’s not at all creative; nothing on screen really stands out. The colour filter is a little too warm for the winter season, but it does emit the welcoming glow of most holiday romance films. Overall, there’s enough here to satiate hopeless romantics and their need to fall in love this Christmas season.
