The most luxurious beaches in Gran Canaria
The Canary Islands are a popular vacation spot all year round. Most people are familiar with Tenerife’s Las Teresitas, Lanzarote’s Papagayo, Fuerteventura’s Cofete or Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas, however, there are plenty of other stunning touristic locations that are worth visiting on Gran Canaria’s shoreline.
Whether one is interested in traditional architecture, sports, looking for a hidden cove ideal for taking in beautiful sunsets, or just finding a secluded spot to hang out with friends, there’s a destination to fit!
Güi Güi beach
The first stop is the beautiful Güi Güi beach. Due to its status as one of the island’s most unique ecosystems, it has received protection from UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. Güi Güi is situated in the southwest of the island, close to the community of San Nicolás. This beach is difficult to get to, as the trek can take more than an hour and a halt to complete on foot.
It features two distinct areas, Güi Güi Chico and Güi Güi Grande, which are both clearly distinct from one another. The serenity, peace and seclusion that many people look for when they travel are, nonetheless, something that these two places share in common.
For breathtaking vistas and a cliff that rises more than 850m, Güi Güi is the one. It’s a unique chance to spend a day in nature and disconnect from the outside world.
San Agustín beach
The San Agustin beach is located inside the tourist hub of the same name in the southern part of Gran Canaria. It is a popular tourist destination where visitors enjoy all sorts of amenities and special services. However, it’s not as busy as other beaches, so there is some peace too. San Agustin beach is a great place to unwind and relax for a few days, but if the quiet isn’t not enough, one of the biggest thalassotherapy facilities on the island is only a short drive away.
On this beautiful coast, waves are mild enough for kids to play on the shoreline, since the waters are calm and the current is very weak. There are also many terraces, cafes and restaurants to eat at along its lengthy promenade, which links to the south with the popular Playa del Inglés.
In San Agustín there are services such as free parking, lifeguards, showers, sunbeds and umbrella rentals, as well as access to the Maspalomas transit system.
For a luxury hotel in the beach of San Agustín, look no more, Paradisus Gran Canaria, is a stunning new resort build in a lush natural environment. Here, guests have the opportunity to fully immerse in an amazing luxury experience infused with the spirit of the local culture. It also offers unique cultural experiences and regional activities both outside of the hotel and within the area.
Amadores beach
Located on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, specifically in the town of Mogán, Amadores beach is a very attractive touristic sport for those who love the sun and golden sand. It’s an ideal place to rest, take a relaxing walk down the beach and enjoy the good weather.
Amadores is an artificial beach in the shape of a bowl. It has crystal-clear waters and it’s located in a beautiful bay that is well protected from sea currents. That is why it’s highly recommended for travellers of all ages and of any physical condition, as well as families with little children.
Dedo de Dios beach
For a contrast from bright dunes to the darkest volcanic night, Puerto de las Nieves is among the most stunning and emblematic beaches on the island of Gran Canaria.
To what does this beach own its intriguing name? Prior to 2005 there was an odd, long rock there known as the “Finger of God”. A powerful tropical storm uprooted this once famous natural wonder, and today all that is left is a beach with the same name and the lowest portion of the rock formation.
Aguadulce and Tufia Beach
These two stunning natural wonders can be found next to one another in the Telde municipality, on Gran Canaria’s east coast. These locations are a little obscure and do not frequently show up in tourist guides. However, they offer a traditional charm that is rare to find in modern Gran Canaria.
A cove of rounded stones and dark volcanic sand make up Tufia beach with a small collection of white houses along its shore that serve as a constant reminder of the town’s distinctive identity as a fishing village.
The Aguadulce beach is just a short distance away. Here, the surroundings completely change, with ochre-coloured sand and beautifully clear water. There’s also an important archaeological site located between the two beaches, where one can visit the remains of the ancient settlement known as Tufia. The south of Aguadulce beach is not a particularly popular touristic place, which makes it perfect for those interested in diving and snorkelling.
