Four British comedians who could break America in 2023
Many Brits have conquered the USA over the years, becoming international celebrities and stars of the screen both in the UK and in the land of opportunity.
In more recent times, the likes of Daniel Sloss and James Acaster have become huge in the States, and there are many more hoping to follow along the same pathway.
It’s always interesting to see what sort of comics and what sort of material breaks America. For some, it’s tales of alcohol rehab and addiction, while for others it’s observational material and wacky jokes. But who are the Brits who many would love to see break America over the next 12 months?
John Kearns
John Kearns certainly falls into the wacky category of comedy and his profile is shooting up in the UK at present. He’s been popular on the circuit for a number of years and is definitely one of those that’s considered “a comedian’s comedian”.
He was recently on British comedy challenge show Taskmaster, which will have certainly boosted his profile, and a spell in the US could see his stock rise even further as one of the best stand-ups around at the moment.
John Robins
Sticking with Johns, John Robins has produced award-winning stand-up show after award-winning stand-up show, and he’s back out on tour next year with another routine – one many would love to see do well overseas.
His material is relatively dark, and he won the Edinburgh Comedy Award back in 2017 for an act that was based upon the breakdown of his relationship with fellow comedian Sara Pascoe.
Peter Kay
This man is one of the biggest comics ever to come out of the UK, but his material is perhaps so British that it doesn’t really translate anywhere else. Peter Kay is a British icon and has triumphantly returned to the stage in recent weeks after a long absence.
He’s not only famed for his stand-up, but also his sitcoms, although they perhaps mostly only relate to the north of England, never mind the rest of the world. It would be interesting to see how he’d do across the pond, though.
David O’Doherty
David O’Doherty is in fact Irish, but he’s included on the list because he’s so well loved, and he’s also predominantly making his name on British television and on the country’s circuit.
He’s a musical act, and the obscurity of his act is just so funny. He has played small shows in the USA with clear success, and many would love to see him given a chance in the mainstream.
