“There’s so much diversity but you don’t feel like that’s the topic – the only topic is love”: Javicia Leslie and Daryl Wein on Something from Tiffany’s
Something from Tiffany’s, based on the novel of the same name by Melissa Hill, is pure Christmassy romcom goodness, given a contemporary feel by its diverse ensemble cast of characters. Girl-of-the-moment Zoey Deutch leads proceedings as Rachel, opposite Kendrick Sampson as Ethan. Their paths cross when a mix-up of bags happens at a jewellery counter. Cue the usual fare of comedic mishaps and romantic intrigue, set against an appealingly wintry New York City that emerges as a character in itself. There’s nothing in the plot or premise that will provoke surprise, but its reflection of modern society brings something fresh to the well-worn genre.
The Upcoming had the pleasure of chatting with Javicia Leslie about playing Sophia opposite Jojo T Gibbs as her gay partner Terri Blake, the importance to her of accurate representation in a film such as this, and the fun she had on set. We also discussed her tenure playing Batwoman for the second and third season of the series.
We also spoke to director Daryl Wein about why he wanted to make the film, his casting decisions and the joys of capturing New York City at its festive finest.
