Affordable holidays: How about a road trip?
Different people might find themselves drawn to the idea of a road trip for different reasons. It can be a diverse and dynamic environment for themselves and their friends to explore together through a memorable experience, or a chance to understand the history of a particular route or series of locations. However, some might be drawn to the prospect of a holiday that has the potential to be a great deal more affordable.
In order to explore how true that would be, it’s necessary to look at the different aspects of a road trip, as some individual tastes and requirements might hike up the price more than others.
Vehicle
There are options for the vehicle to use for this trip, which might depend on the number of passengers or guests thinking of going. For larger groups, obviously a larger vehicle will be more suitable, such as a minibus or a camper van. Perhaps having a car already feels like being deadlocked into using it instead of a preferable vehicle, but that might not have to be the case. Pooling money together might help with hiring or buying a larger, mobile domicile.
Alternatively, there’s always the option of logbook loans to explore when accessing transport for a road trip with On Your Car, which can offer a loan against a current vehicle that helps raise funds for the trip and rent something better suited the road ahead.
Accommodation
The other major cost that might jump out could well be accommodation. As mentioned previously, larger vehicles that take travellers from place to place could well include something like a camper van that could ideally allow everyone to sleep in it. However, this might eventually poses issues of space and comfort.
Alternatively, holidaymakers could all pack camping supplies and try to find suitable places to camp along the journey, though this can be difficult if the relevant country doesn’t allow this so freely. On the more luxurious end of the spectrum, there’s the option of hotels and other such venues wherever the journey stops, which could quickly eat quite significantly in the budget unless the trip is shortened to make up for it.
Food and drink
A cost that might be unexpected in terms of its impact is simple food and drink. When on the road for extended periods of time, there’s a good chance there won’t be access to cooking supplies that can facilitate eating relatively healthily for a reasonable price (that is, unless one opts for a more liveable vehicle).
That means that travellers might either find themselves resorting to regular stops at cafes, diners, restaurants or bars, all of which could get very expensive in not much time, or buying ready-to-eat food from supermarkets that might quickly take a toll on health and general comfort if relied upon too greatly. Finding a middle ground that makes it possible to enjoy the time is important here, and it might turn out that spending a little bit here can make for a more enjoyable experience.
