“It’s a tragic love story”: Rhianne Barreto and Abigail Lawrie on No Escape

No Escape is the brand-new show landing on Paramount+ this week, based on Lucy Clarke’s crime thriller novel of the same name. It follows best mates Kitty (Rhianne Barreto) and Lana (Abigail Lawrie) who are on the run from their life back home in the UK on what becomes something of extended gap year backpacking in Thailand. When they blag spots on a yacht called The Blue with a group of strangers for crew, they seem to have landed on their feet. But all is not all it seems, and a creeping dread permeates the screen. One of the first UK original dramas on the platform, it’s got a wonderfully British feel, despite its exotic locations, while the tension is expertly built within the confines of the boat; the relatable characters and female friendship underpinning the drama give it grounding and heart.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking with Barreto and Lawrie about the intricacy of their roles, emphasising the contrast and complementary nature of their personalities, while also highlighting the complex relationship between them, describing it as an intense “tragic love story”. They also delved into the immersive process of preparing for their roles, including understanding the characters’ backstories and spending time together offset. Filming in exotic locations was a unique experience, albeit physically demanding, adding a layer of authenticity to the series. Both actors reflected on the significance of representing UK culture globally as part of Paramount+’s first UK original drama. The series, they hope, is not just a thrilling journey with twists and turns but also a depiction of powerful female friendship and survival. Barreto and Lawrie also hinted at their future projects, expressing desires to work on a play and indie films respectively.
