“For season two, the level just went up across the board”: Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Henney, Dónal Finn and Ceara Coveney on The Wheel of Time season two

The Wheel of Time has been set in motion for a second series of eight episodes. Based on the fantasy book series from author Robert Jordan, this magical adaptation by showrunner Rafe Judkins follows a simple farm boy called Rand Al‘Thor (Josha Stradowski), who finds out in season one that he holds the power of the Dragon Reborn – a mighty historical figure who battles against the Dark One. As the story evolves and grows and the wheel turns, the Last Battle between light and shadow is a close reality, as the fight to rid the world of evil suddenly approaches.

This season brings together the established cast from season one, including Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred and Daniel Henney as her Warder Lan Mandragoran, alongside some new faces who evolve and help round out the weaving storylines. Viewers will see more layers of emotion to the characters this time round, with romance on the cards for some, as we move through different timelines. The brutality and gore of the battle scenes become more intense through these new episodes, as we edge closer towards the apocalyptic war.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to the cast of the show to find out what fans can expect from this new season and what the epic story has yet to deliver.

Henney chatted about returning in his role as Lan, the changes he goes through in the series and the bond he shares with the character Moraine Damaded (Pike). He also spoke about the physical challenges of his role and his commitment to this hugely epic adaptation.

We spoke to Marcus Rutherford about his character’s journey, the kinship with the wolves, and where his story arc goes in this new season, as well as what it was like to film in stunning new locations.

Dónal Finn and Ceara Coveney talked about being newcomers in season two and what drew them to the script. They described coming onto the set and the authenticity behind the construction of the village. They also told us about building friendships in the show and the importance of the costumes in delivering the historical events.

Wheel of Time season two is released on Amazon Prime on 1st September 2023.
