Creative ideas on how to enjoy the garden all year round

Everyone loves having a nice garden; however, it’s a real shame when it’s only being used for a couple of months a year. If one is living anywhere like the United Kingdom, winter is associated with wet and cold weather. In other words, the garden is the last place one would want to hang out during that time of the year…

However, it really doesn’t have to be that way! There are various different things that can be done to transform the outdoor space into a winter-friendly place, inviting throughout the year. Here are some of the favorite ideas on how to achieve just that.

Create a cosy shelter

First and foremost, to be able to enjoy the garden in the winter, a shelter from the rain and wind will be wanted. This can be done in numerous different ways, depending on the budget and space available. One of the most popular and easiest options is getting a summer house. Despite their name, summer houses are a great choice for the winter, as they can be easily insulated and have proper heating added. Some of them are also big enough to include comfortable seating and other furnishings.

If one is looking for something slightly more budget-friendly, a gazebo can also be considered. While it might not be quite as insulated, weather-resistant curtains or clear vinyl enclosures can be added to shelter from the cold. Outdoor heaters can also be used to keep warm while enjoying hot chocolate and watching the rain. When picking the material for the gazebos wooden is certainly more sturdy than plastic.

For those lucky enough to already have a sturdy structure in their garden, it can also be transformed into a cosy winter shelter. For instance, outdoor greenhouses or old wooden barns can work perfectly for the purpose.

Lighting and decor

Lighting plays a crucial role in winter gardens. Soft, warm lighting can be used to highlight paths, decorate trees and structures, and create a welcoming ambience. Solar-powered lights are an eco-friendly option, providing a magical glow without the need for electrical wiring.

Consider also seasonal decorations like wreaths, outdoor-safe ornaments, and even a small fire pit for an added element of warmth and charm. Don’t forget to also include bits and pieces like blankets, cushions, candles, and other decorations that will add an extra feeling of cosiness.

Plant choices for winter

The winter garden can remain vibrant all year long with the right plant choices. Evergreens or winter-blooming flowers that can withstand the colder temperatures should be opted for. Plants like hellebores, winter jasmine, and witch hazel can add a splash of color. Including bird feeders and baths can attract wildlife, bringing life and movement to the garden during the quieter months. If gardening is not one’s thing, fake plants can also be used to add more greenery into the gloomy winter months.

Final thoughts

The outdoor space is not just there for the summer. With a bit of thought and creativity, one can transform the garden into a cherished space all year round! Embracing the cosiness and charm of the colder seasons will allow people to truly enjoy it.
