The Eras Tour: Taylor Swift’s billion dollar tour
How did she do it? Taylor Swift has been announced by Daily Post as the first musician to become a billionaire from earnings generated solely by music, thanks to her Eras Tour.
If you think this deeply enough, you will realise that before Taylor Swift came into the music industry, there were world-celebrated musicians just like her now. But that they never achieved this height will make you wonder how Taylor did it.
We’ve occasionally celebrated the world’s richest musicians with the likes of Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and Madonna, to name the least. However, Taylor’s achievement now creates a different idea of their wealth. Their wealth was never completely acquired through music.
Rihanna for one has a side hustle. A business, which she is the CEO of, known as “Fenty, Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty.”
Curiously, we decided to dig into Taylor Swift’s Billion Dollar Tour and you know the one. The Eras Tour is the American singer’s 6th headlined tour and it is based on her 10 studio albums and 4 re-recorded versions of some of the studio albums.
So far, as per Box Office, the Tour has generated close to $800 million in 56 shows. Officially, the Eras Tour spans 151 shows, so if you do the math, you’ll realise that the income will double, if not triple by the end of the tour which is December 8th, 2024.
The singer recently rounded up the second leg of her tour with South America on the receiving end. Plans are already on the ground for the tour to commence next year and you can get the Eras Tour tickets from a reliable marketplace, while we break down Taylor Swift’s billion-dollar tour to uncover how she did it.
The Eras Tour tickets
We’ve known Taylor Swift to be a world-recognised pop star since 2018, after her “Reputation Stadium Tour” went viral, specifically for its aesthetics and its concept. However, the world instantly knew Taylor Swift had transitioned into a musical goddess after the sales of her Eras Tour tickets broke on Ticketmaster’s website.
Ticketmaster’s data proved that the amount of traffic fans generated on their site when the Eras tour tickets started selling was more than 900 million requests.
This meant that Taylor Swift would have had to perform a single show for every night spanning across 2/1 years if all fan requests were to be met.
Extensively, we discovered that the average Eras tour ticket request by a single invited fan was 3 and Ticketmaster reported that at least 40% of invited fans come to get tickets for themselves after being invited.
Now this is where it gets even more interesting. Officially, Ticketmaster registered more than 3.5 million Swifties for the Eras tour tickets pre-sale. The shock is that only 1.5 million of these Swifties got the chance to get eras tour tickets when the sales started, placing 2 million others on the waiting list.
You can imagine the disbelief on the faces of those SWifities placed on the waiting list when Ticketmaster announced that they were able to sell 2 million tickets for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on the 15th of Nov.
Doing the math, that means up to 500k invited fans were able to purchase the eras tour tickets from Ticketmaster, by-passing the already registered Swifties.
Speaking of how tickets contributed to Taylor’s billion-dollar tour, a single ticket for the Eras tour costs between $49 to $499 in the US only.
The 2 million tickets sold on the 15th of November were in the US only. That means at least $98 million was generated from the US alone, on day 1 of the Eras Tour ticket sales, if the tickets all go for $49 per one.
By chance, if the tickets were all purchased for $499 per one; this is dependent on the section of the tour – then Taylor’s Team would have made $998 million from 1 day alone. But let’s not exaggerate these figures, there’s no way 2 million people will buy tickets worth $499 per one, is there?
The Eras Tour merchandise
One thing that makes every tour a memorable one is the ability of the fans to be intimate with the performer. A good tourist will try to make that happen, and that is one of the things that Taylor Swift paid special attention to while preparing for the Eras Tour.
On Taylor’s official online store, you’ll be welcomed by a variety of Eras Tour merchandise that range from tops to hoodies, all available in different colors.
Have you been to any of the Eras Tour concerts before, you’ll realise that nothing is differentiating it from a high school football game, or the NFL with Travis Kelce playing since every 5 out of 10 Swifties seems to have a Taylor Swift Eras Tour top on, making it a uniformed event.
The prices for these merchandise range from $45 to $75. Imagine, with half of every group of 10 Swifities having purchased one, it means in a stadium of 60k people, 30k or more will have the Taylor Swift Eras Tour top on.
This means that at least $1.350 million was generated from the sales of Eras Tour tops to 30k people if they all decided to buy the one for $45. If the 30k fans decide to spend $75 each for Taylor’s Eras Tour merchandise, then Taylor’s team will walk away with $2.250 million.
Note that this calculation is for Brazil only where Taylor had 11 sold-out performances in May earlier this year, with more than 60k people attending each show.
Also, Eras Tour tops aren’t the only merchandise displayed on Taylor’s official online store. You will find photo pins, as well as Photo Postcards and Bandanas. Bracelets and phone casings also made the display line.
Even though these items are listed cheaply, fans tend to buy them in bulk. However, if you calculate a single item, like the photo postcard that goes for $10 for example, multiplying it by 30k people will give you $300k which is enough to make its addition known in the net worth of the Eras Tour now.
The Eras Tour movie
Even though some fans were displeased by the 33-year-old American singer for not including their favorite songs in the movie, Taylor Swift has been praised for her incredible thinking by capturing the Eras Tour magical moments in a movie that will go down in history.
The Eras Tour Movie also played its part by adding a fair figure to the Eras Tour’s total net worth and this is how.
An adult ticket for the Eras Tour movie was sold for $19.89, while children and seniors get to pay $13.13. Take note that these prices included taxes as well.
Expectedly, the movie generated more than $96 million in the opening week.
The Eras Tour was planned to be a billion-dollar tour from the beginning. Taylor has also been intensively criticised by critics who call her a “Grabbing pop star.”
But the fans are not complaining. Besides, it takes a lot of money to organise a tour such as the Eras Tour and the bills won’t pay themselves.
Fun Fact: The Eras Tour Movie tickets were sold for prices that reflected Taylor’s version of the 1989 album ($19.89 for adults), and 13.13 ($13.13) which reflected her birthday and her lucky number.
