The Boys in the Boat: On the red carpet with George Clooney, Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner and Bruce Herbelin-Earle

The Boys in the Boat is a biographical story set in the 1930s, adapted from the book of the same name by Daniel James Brown. This inspirational true story follows a working-class rowing team put together with students from Washington University. It tracks their fearless determination, the friendships they forge and the romantic threads that underpin their tale.

When Joe Rantz (Callum Turner) and some of his fellow classmates get picked for the team by Coach Ulbrick (Joel Edgerton) they go from absolute beginners in this sport to forging their way up to the team that was entered for the 1936 Olympics, which were held in Berlin. Competing for gold, their journey to victory is set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the rumblings of World War II.

We spoke to George Clooney on the red carpet at the movie’s London premiere about why he chose to tell this story and take it on as director, what the casting process was like and how intense the training sessions were to get the boys up to that level of rowing.

Bruce Herbelin-Earle discussed coming on board with this story, working with such a dedicated cast ensemble and what he hoped viewers would take away from watching the movie.

Callum Turner spoke to us about playing the underdog in the film, the dedication to the part that he played and the work he put in to train for a few months prior to filming the feature. He also spoke about working with Clooney on set.

Edgerton also shared his reflections on taking on the role of Coach Ulbrick and working with Clooney as director.
