Lock-In – On to the Next
Lock-In, the Hertfordshire-grown quintet, have plenty of stellar singles under their belt, as well as successful tour experience from this past year; on 19th January 2024, the next chapter for Lock-In begins. Their new EP On to the Next will grace all streaming platforms, and it has solidified the band as one to watch.
Although currently there are many beloved alternative rock bands across the UK, Lock-In has a unique flair. Each track on On to the Next is proof of this, and even though it is only five tracks, with about a 15-minute runtime and three already released songs, this compilation is a great taste of what Lock-In has to offer.
Benjy Leak’s lead vocals across this project, most notably the strong, yet raspy delivery of Red Stripe Remedy, are memorable and interesting. Coupled with brother Joe’s fun and swingy guitar riffs, the Leak duo has outstanding chemistry, especially in the title track. Angus Moore supports the Leaks well, of course, and Ollie Stacey’s work on the drums really shines in the final song, He Said She Said. Easy is the true highlight of this collection: Sam Collins’s bass allows for a steady groove that complements both guitarists well, Stacey’s drums are solid as ever and the overall production is pristine. Another highlight is Intro; although heavily instrumental and electronic, this is a perfect first track.
If the production quality of On to the Next was not impressive enough, the five top it off with catchy and solid lyrics. It is difficult to write songs as great as these, and Lock-In successfully created and curated a project that not only blends sonically, but lyrically; and it is all self-made.
Lock-In may be fresh, but they have honed into a special sound. With the likeness of Sam Fender and Catfish and the Bottlemen, there is high potential that this band will meet the same fate as these beloved artists. Lock-In deserves to be proud of this record, and the excellence of On to the Next will hopefully transfer to any future album.
