Barbie and Poor Things triumph at the Girls on Film Awards 2024 in London

On the evening of 20th February 2024, the Regent Street Cinema in central London became a beacon for celebrating women in film as it played host to the third annual Girls On Film Awards. Leading the night, the summer blockbuster Barbie clinched the Production Design and Publicity Awards, while the critically acclaimed Poor Things saw British costume designer Holly Waddington take home the newly introduced Costume Design Award.

The ceremony, helmed by Girls On Film podcast host Anna Smith and co-founder Hedda Archbold, welcomed a number of presenters including Monica Dolan, Ronni Ancona and Mark Kermode. Emma Stone earned the Female Orgasm on Screen Award, sponsored by Intimacy on Set, for her role in Poor Things, highlighting the event’s focus on the diverse and inclusive representation of women and people of marginalised genders in cinema.

Other standout winners of the night included Molly Manning Walker, who was awarded for her Cinematography in Scrapper, and Mica Levi, who received the Composer Award for The Zone of Interest. The story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad’s journey, portrayed in Nyad by Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, won the Female Friendship in Screen Award, while the ensemble cast of Bottoms was celebrated with the Ensemble Cast Award.

In a nod to the men who support the advancement of women in the industry, the Girls pn Film Ally Award, sponsored by IMDb, was presented to William Oldroyd for his work in Eileen. The Activist Impact Award was secured by Reclaim The Frame, an organisation dedicated to championing underrepresented perspectives in film.

Celine Song’s Past Lives was honoured with the Fiction Feature Award, backed by EON Productions, and the Feature Documentary Award was given to Kokomo City. The winners were chosen by a panel of leading and diverse women film critics from across the UK, as well as male allies who have appeared on the Girls On Film podcast.

The Girls On Film Awards precede International Women’s Day and follow closely on the heels of the EE BAFTA Film Awards, reinforcing their significance in the film industry’s awards season. The event not only celebrated the achievements of the past year but also set a standard for the future of women-focused film excellence.
