Lady Like: On the red carpet with Lady Camden, Luke Willis and Cookie Walukas at BFI Flare
Lady Like is a documentary that follows the story of Rex Wheeler, a London-born drag queen who rises to fame with her alter ego Lady Camden after appearing on season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race show. Now based in San Francisco, the feature tracks her journey from the roots of her upbringing in Camden and the hardships faced as a child because of bullying and family loss, through to her popularity and professional stardom.
Brought to screen through a collaboration with friend and filmmaker Luke Willis, the film sensitively documents childhood trauma, the importance of friendship and the beautiful family that she found on the drag scene. Her narrative also showcases her incredible skills as a prima ballerina and dancer after training at The Royal Ballet School (White Lodge).
The Upcoming had the pleasure of speaking to Lady Camden about why she chose to tell her story, her friendship with Willis and the themes that come through in this emotive and heartfelt account.
Luke Willis chatted about what made sharing this tale so poignant, the importance of telling queer stories and being part of the BFI Flare festival.
We spoke to the film producer Cookie Walukas about coming on board to work on this project, the brilliant character and talent of Lady Camden, some of the highlights from filming and also being chosen for the closing gala at BFI Flare.
