Between Riverside and Crazy at Hampstead Theatre
The London premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Between Riverside and Crazy arrives at Hampstead Theatre. Stephen Aldy Guirgis’s play centres on former NYC cop Walter, portrayed here by Dan Sapani. Locked in a dispute with his force over his being shot by a white officer, our protagonist resides in a rent-controlled home and associates with what society deems to be undesirables. All the ingredients for a rich character study and examination of society are laid on the table.
The production paces along rapidly, despite a more than two-hour run time. Brimming with humorous colloquialisms, the subtext of institutionalised racism permeates, leaving us with much food for thought. While well-intentioned, the use of comedy does somewhat distil the serious subject matter Guirgis aims to explore. Should we laugh or should we shake our heads in frustration?
Much like the city in which Walter lives, there is a sense of the play feeling a tad overcrowded. Supporting characters are well acted but lacking in development, while Walter on too many occasions veers towards being reactive. It is a shame as the potential drama is fighting its way to the surface.
Sapani exudes charisma and effortless comedy. The actor utterly engages throughout. He is well supported by Tiffany Gray, Martins Imhangbe, Daniel Lapaine, Sebastian Orozco and Judith Roddy. The cohesive cast more than deliver. However, what should be an electric production somewhat flatlines. Perhaps it is a case of a 2015 New York play being less reticent and relatable to a UK audience in 2024, but it lacks the bite of the writer’s other works.
It’s interesting to see how a Pulitzer Prize-winning play translates to a London audience: we may not take away what those across the pond did, however, it must be said Between Riverside and Crazy provokes some thought. Sadly, this production seems destined to remain but a fleeting experience as opposed to the lingering impression it deserves.
