Pvris at the Troxy

Pvris started out as a hardcore act named Operation Guillotine, but quickly shifted to incorporate the pop, rock and electro elements that were on the rise at the time – and it’s been working well for them. Over their ten-year history, members have come and gone, leaving singer Lynn Gunn as the sole permanent fixture. For tonight’s show at Troxy, she is placed at the front of the stage, separate from the rest of the performers, much like a solo artist rather than a band member.

Gunn opens the show with the punchy and relatively new I Don’t Wanna Do This Anymore, followed by the attitude-soaked Animal, and Dead Weight. Her vocals are flawless throughout, and when paired with a prominent reverberating bass, these newer songs are thrilling to experience live. They showcase Pvris’ shift from electro rock to a more electronic pop sound, perhaps due to the frontwoman taking the reins solo.

The heavier and rawer elements in singles Smoke and Fire from their debut album White Noise, contrast well with the balladry of new lead sing Oil & Water.

During the set, Gunn pauses to appreciate the crowd and says that “London feels like home – you guys have shown us so much love over the years”. Throughout the show she makes an effort to engage with her audience, revealing an anecdote regarding Pvris’ first show in the British capital, which she describes as a “trainwreck” and very “humbling”.

As the mosh pits get more raucous for Burn the Witch and Mirrors, Troxy really comes to life. For the encore, after playing the much loved My House, Gunn explains that this is the “tast show of the tour and the last song of the night” before inviting supporting act Scene Queen to join for the poptastic, heavy-hitting Goddess.

Lynn Gunn has shown she can deliver a Pvris show perfectly well as a solo artist, and it will be intriguing to see where this new era takes her.
