The Warning – Keep Me Fed
The Warning, the rock trio consisting of the Villarreal Vélez sisters, are back with their new album Keep Me Fed: a raw, blistering entry that sees the Monterrey Rockers stretch some newly discovered melodic muscles.
The album kicks off with Six Feet Deep, a buzzy opener fuelled by thunderous bass runs and a wave of thumping kick drums. S!CK opens with the isolated blast of drums and the revving of a distorted guitar that slowly builds until lead vocalist Daniela “Dany” Villarreal Vélez lashes out with the sudden punk-tinged call of “Sick!”. It’s a fiery entry and an indicator of what’s to come. Apologise is an exercise in attack and release that sees the rhythm alternate between hooky, picked bass lines and zippy electric guitar threads, to a gently strummed acoustic bridge and subdued vocals that are brought to a whisper just moments before we are met with the unrelenting crash of cranked-up guitars and the violent stomp of percussion.
With More, things begin to get exponentially weightier as the bass threads become thicker and more hard-rock-infused rhythms take hold. The vocal bridge of “Just kill the noise, won’t you fill my void?” is a particular highlight that sees the trio strut towards a chorus that hits you with a wave of disdainful shouts and crunching licks. Consume couples a muscular central riff with vitriolic, more pop-punk-inspired melodies, before the album comes to a close with Automatic Sun, a meaty number that couples commanding, clean vocals and the amp-busting whir of electric guitar.
Keep Me Fed is a mature, self-assured outing from the rock trio that is fit-to-burst with searing guitar threads, brawny basslines and vicious, theatrical vocals that so fluently flit between thunderous hooks and more restrained tones. While it can be said that at times some of the connective tissue of their tracks might begin to feel overly familiar, it is none-the-less clear that The Warning are a band brimming with authenticity and, with a vehicle in Keep Me Fed, the Villarreal Vélez sisters continue to blast out their own brand of thick, hulking riffs that put more than enough of a spin on the well-worn tropes of the genre to leave their listeners hungry for more.
