Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson set for November release, explores family legacy and African American heritage
The upcoming film The Piano Lesson, directed and co-written by Malcolm Washington, is scheduled to premiere in select cinemas on 8th November, followed by a release on Netflix on 22nd November. Prior to its wider release, the film will be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival as a special presentation on 10th September 2024.
The Piano Lesson, adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, explores the conflicting desires of a brother and sister over the fate of a cherished family heirloom piano. While the brother, portrayed by John David Washington, sees the piano as a means to financial prosperity, his sister, played by Danielle Deadwyler, views it as an irreplaceable link to their heritage. Samuel L Jackson stars as their uncle, who struggles to mediate the family tensions that are further complicated by the echoes of their ancestors.
In discussing the film, Washington expressed his reverence for August Wilson’s work and its portrayal of African American heritage. “I honour the spirit of August Wilson and the legacy he left behind for all of us. A legacy that thrives in the power of Danielle Deadwyler’s Berniece, the dynamism of John David Washington’s Boy Willie and the understated brilliance that is Samuel L Jackson’s Doaker,” Washington said.
He further elaborated on the themes of the film, stating, “Every family has a history, stories from the past that inform the present; an origin story. Ultimately this story is much bigger than me and my family – it, like the Black American experience, is an interconnected web of stories that span space and time. I hope that when audiences experience our film, they see themselves on the screen and hear the voices of their ancestors calling to them, offering peace and protection.”
The Piano Lesson marks Washington’s feature directorial debut and boasts a production team led by Oscar-nominated producers Denzel Washington and Todd Black. The film also features performances from an ensemble cast including Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu and Corey Hawkins.
This film adaptation underscores the ongoing relevance of Wilson’s narrative, exploring themes of identity, resilience and the shaping of legacies through the lens of a single family’s deeply personal and poignant struggle.
