Rob Peace

Rob Peace | Movie review

Directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who also stars as the titular protagonist’s father, Rob Peace is an affecting, if frustrating, watch. Based on Jeff Hobbs’s biography of his friend and college roommate, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, Ejiofor’s film is a timely rumination on societal and structural hurdles for young Black men in America.

Rob (Jay Will) is a child prodigy who uses his scientific expertise to help exonerate his father after he’s convicted of murdering two girls (the conviction is based almost entirely on the fact that his voice resembles the killer’s). His indefatigable work ethic ultimately proves his undoing, as he takes it upon himself to be the saviour of all those around him. This results in the savant juggling his academic pursuits with drug dealing as a last resort.

A harrowing depiction of systemic racism, the film shows how even Black men who excel as the bastions of moral fortitude aren’t permitted the slightest infraction. Mary J Blige gives a heartfelt performance as Rob’s mother, nurturing her son’s academic capabilities while attempting to ward off the stigma that his name carries.

Where the film falters, however, is in the direction and storytelling. The narration gives it an unfortunate 90s feel, while the dialogue is unnecessarily exposition-heavy. Much like the title character is a man of science and meticulous precision, the feature is similarly formulaic. Ejiofor’s direction distinctly lacks creative flair, but is nonetheless competent, allowing the excellent performances to shine through.

As the movie reaches its devastating conclusion, one can’t help but feel that its real-life subject deserved a more nuanced introspection on his tragic story, the likes of which he and his family were not permitted in life. But regardless, Rob Peace is adept at pulling at the heartstrings and the outstanding cast more than make up for any stylistic shortcomings.
