Zayn at Hammersmith Apollo
14 years after his television debut and subsequent ascent to superstardom, Zayn Malik is rebuilding his live presence in a way that suits him, paring down the spectacle of his past stints at the likes of Wembley and San Siro to the delight of his adoring (and enduring) fanbase.
Thousands descended upon the Eventim Apollo across two sold-out nights in Hammersmith this week, vying for the opportunity to finally share space with their idol, who has at last emerged from his lengthy hibernation. Playing shows of his own for the first time ever, Zayn created an instant and poignant sense of community and ensured from the get-go that the audience knew the evening would be worth the wait.
This energy was warmly reciprocated by members of the crowd, who were fervent in their displays of affection and pride – prior to the concert beginning, a group of fans set about distributing placards with loving messages (bearing “Proud of you” and “Smashing it!”), which were held up during the heady second track Birds on a Cloud. A sea of supportive signs rippled through the theatre, epitomising the profound and pervasive connection between Zayn and a generation of music lovers who have grown up beside him and matured with him.
Naturally more reserved than some of his One Direction counterparts, an all-guns-blazing extravaganza would feel incongruous with not only the singer’s character but his musical style. Instead, Zayn put his most melodic foot forward, keeping conversation to a minimum and presenting his enchanting catalogue through faultless vocals and with refreshingly candid charm. Though direct in addressing the bouts of anxiety that have thus far plagued his live career, it was difficult to understand why anyone with a voice as angelic would feel nervous to share. Better late than never, however, Zayn cherry-picked the best of his four studio albums to create an experience in equal parts intimate and ethereal, moving through hits PILLOWTALK and What I Am in parallel with cult favourites Sweat, Alienated and Concrete Kisses.
Closing out a night of thunderous and dedicated praise from a packed-out room was a heartbreaking homage to collaborator and close friend Liam Payne. Zayn made a swift exit from the stage after declaring new album track Gates of Hell his final offering, choosing to let the stirring Stardust take the reins and playing the song in full whilst a touching tribute was displayed on screen. This proved a most moving end to an overall emotional evening; while there were evidently some nerves when chatting to the crowd, Zayn’s impeccable vocals and atmospheric instrumentals perfectly evidenced a triumphant return to live music.
