Studio One Forever documentary now available on digital platforms

The acclaimed documentary Studio One Forever, which explores the history of America’s pioneering gay disco, Studio One, is now available for purchase and rental on digital platforms as of 6th January 2025. This release follows its successful theatrical run in October.

From its inception in 1974 until its closure in 1994, Studio One and its adjoining live music venue, The Backlot, were at the heart of the gay community in West Hollywood. The club emerged as a sanctuary during a time marked by the rise of gay rights, the zenith of disco, and the harrowing AIDS crisis, providing a safe space amidst widespread homophobia and police oppression.

The documentary arrives at a poignant time, as West Hollywood faces the potential demolition of the iconic building, sparking community efforts to preserve its historic significance. Studio One Forever captures the essence of an era, featuring personal stories set against the backdrop of the gay liberation movement’s clash with 1980s conservatism and the escalating AIDS epidemic.

Directed by Marc Saltarelli, the film is a rich tapestry of narratives, featuring interviews with notable figures such as Chita Rivera, Bruce Vilanch, Sam Harris, Felipe Rose and Lance Bass, among others. The narration is provided by Bruce Vilanch and David Del Valle, complemented by music from influential artists like Donna Summer, Sylvester and the Village People.

Studio One Forever has garnered attention and accolades on the festival circuit, being a Jury Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature at the Austin Film Festival, an Official Selection at the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, and part of the Best of Fest – Audience Favourites at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The documentary not only revisits the disco era but also serves as a vital document of LGBTQ+ history, immortalising the legacy of Studio One for future generations.

For those interested in this vibrant slice of history, Studio One Forever offers a compelling look at an era that defined a community and its fight for acceptance and rights.
