Two close-occurring accidents upended the life of Nashville-based rock artist Michigander a few years ago, and it was the support of fellow artists in his hometown that ultimately led to him picking up his guitar and beginning to record from home again. He returned to the industry a new man and is now releasing his debut, self-titled album, which he collaborated with Grammy-nominated producer Jeremy Lutito on. The record stays true to his signature heartfelt songwriting, capturing the swirl of emotions he has been through and taking fans on an unfiltered journey of both the ups and downs, leaving nothing out.
The first opener is Broadcast. Full of themes of wonderment and dreams, Michigander’s words “Where do we go from here?” subtly nod to his 2019 EP of the same name, something which longtime fans will appreciate. It reflects the pursuit of the American Dream, making it out there on your own, a motif that will surely agree with his largest fanbase in the States. It features some unexpected saxophone – this, interspersed with thick vocal layering, makes for a comforting, thought-provoking opener.
Peace of Mind and Giving Up are both well-crafted but seem to share similar melodies that may be harder for new listeners to distinguish, and this brings the record down a notch or two. Giving Up delves into the toll of sacrificing your own mental health to help someone else, though its message is somewhat diluted by this similarity in sound.
Letterman reflects on the passage of time and inevitable changes in life, with the title referencing TV host David Letterman and the artist’s love of “staying up late just to see what bands were playing” when he was young. It’s an ode to accepting change in life with grace.
Other highlights include I’ll Be OK, an upbeat anthem contrasted with downhearted lyricism. Michigander creates a sing-along melody that will have fans chanting along. Important brings a fresh twist on Michigander’s usual high-energy rock. A stripped-back ballad, its piano intro delivers a soulful reminiscence to listeners.
Michigander closes with the emotional Hair, where he reflects on his mother’s health struggles. His poignant writing – “Her hair is falling out, changing colours” – showcases vulnerability that will resonate deeply with fans who’ve navigated similar challenges.
The artist’s debut album solidifies his place in the industry as a songwriter who is unafraid to expose all, with close-to-the-heart lyricism and vulnerable stories shared. It’s undoubtedly a respectable first step in his musical journey, and this album is sure to be the first of many.
