The White Lotus season three

The White Lotus season three | Show review

A new batch of exceedingly wealthy holidaymakers check in to the titular luxury hotel for the third season of Mike White’s The White Lotus. This time taking place at a scenic island in Thailand, the latest season follows the anthology’s familiar framework as it chronicles how a week in paradise eventually leads to murder. With many of the guests harbouring dark secrets, seeing how this powder keg could eventually ignite is a constant delight.

Like this show’s previous entries, this season boasts an amazing cast. Parker Posey and Jason Isaac as a southern couple travelling with their three children. Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon and Leslie Bibb play three old friends reunited for a girls’ trip, who take every chance they get to tear each other apart. The biggest highlight so far, however, is Walter Goggins as the deeply disgruntled Rick, who desires to see the hotel’s owner for unspecified reasons. Other notable additions include Natasha Rothwell, Tayme Thapthimthong and Lalisa Manoban, each of whom are as brilliant as the last.

Although it takes some time for the plot to find its feet after introducing viewers to both new and old faces, White expertly and carefully raises the stakes as relationships begin to unravel and secrets are revealed. Rick’s barely concealed anger may peg him as the obvious choice for the soon-to-be killer, but with every other guest being just as despicable in their own way, the culprit is anyone’s guess at this point.

White’s satirical edge is still very much present here, too, as he once again takes aim at the social elite. The commentary may not be as vicious as Triangle of Sadness or Infinity Pool, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had with this collection of characters. Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), for instance, is a hilarious parody of the egotistical yuppy who’s only a few degrees away from Patrick Bateman.

The third season of The White Lotus continues to do what the anthology does best. The latest outing may not break any new ground for the show, but the all-star performances and meticulous writing ensure that viewers won’t be disappointed.
