Neal Francis – Return to Zero

After more than three years, Neal Francis is back with his third full-length studio album, Return to Zero. True to form, Francis continues to take inspiration from eminent artists such as Allen Toussaint and Dr John with his own unique blend of funk, rock, soul and disco that feels both nostalgic and new – and what a treat it is.
The album kicks off with Need You Again, an irresistibly funky track with a magnetic guitar riff, smooth bass notes and catchy vocals. The production is excellent, with the rhythmic beat perfectly accentuated by the crisp sound of the hi-hat, and enchanting synths that contribute to the carefree and playful feel of the song. With Don’t Wait, the vivacious bass line from Mike Starr is the highlight. Comparably to songs such as Jamiroquai’s Space Cowboy, Vulfpeck’s Wait for the Moment or Hideout by Parcels, this song is a testament to how a strong and intoxicating bass line can singularly elevate a song in a refreshing and exciting way. Alongside Broken Glass, both of these tracks feature Brooklyn-based band Say She She, whose trio of voices delightfully combine disco and funk with delicately emanating harmonies.
What’s Left of Me delivers a slight shift lyrically from the joyous tone of the rest of the album. With lyrics co-written by Chris Gelbuda (producer of Meghan Trainor’s Platinum single Like I’m Gonna Lose You), it is a melancholic track about the difficulties of maintaining a relationship whilst performing around the world, and the durability of loving someone who isn’t there. Despite its reflective nature, it is a punchy pop song filled with syncopated rhythms and light melodies.
Francis’s first two albums, Changes (2019) and In Plain Sight (2021), showcased his fondness of funk, soul and rock music and an enthusiastic exploration of varying and syncopated rhythms, riffs and grooves. With Return to Zero, it feels as if Francis is continuing to pay homage to that adoration, whilst still experimenting, developing and having fun with his sound. The rest of the album is similarly energetic, with undoubtedly groovy entries such as Dance Through Life and Already Gone and 150 More Times providing the platform for Francis’s piano skills to dazzle.
It is clear that when it comes to studio recording, Francis and his longtime producer Sergio Rios have an appreciation for musical authenticity. The effect of recording live, and utilising analog over digital programming, can be felt throughout the album. The energy and passion of the live performers are noticeably transparent and ensure that each track feels spirited and dynamic. With an international tour scheduled throughout 2025, Neal Francis has an exciting year ahead and Return to Zero, with its eclectic mix of genres, has supplied the perfect momentum.
