Gaming has a long history, dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, with simple games. This was long before giants like Sega and Nintendo entered online gaming. Telephone lines were first used to transfer information between gaming consoles, but were slow and unstable. An example was the GameLine, launched in 1982 by William Von Meister.
The gaming industry started blowing up in the early 1990s. Releases included consoles from the 4th generation 16-bit era, when the Internet became public in 1993. As the mobile and internet gaming industry grew, its rapid expansion was soon worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
The rise of gaming
Microsoft released its Xbox Live online gaming system in 2001 and was soon a must-have for any serious gamer. It released its World of Warcraft smash hit in 2004, and it peaked at 14 million monthly subscribers. During this time, Nintendo was still at the top of the gaming industry with its handheld Game Boy consoles.
Nokia and BlackBerry were the first mobile providers that sought to integrate a variety of gaming apps on their phones, perfect for entertainment on long road trips. It was Apple and their iPhones that transformed mobile gaming.
The App Store launch, followed not long after by the Google store for Android handheld devices, paved the way for developers of gaming products to create free or paid-for games with the release of their apps and made them available to a massive market.
Who plays video games
The games were initially seen as only for boys, but were designed to be enjoyed by the entire family. Older TV advertisements would show families having fun together playing games like Pong from Atari.
In the 1980s, gaming companies marketed many of their games for boys as they were believed to be their biggest market. The markets have shifted and expanded to include all players from all cultures, ages, and sexes.
Nintendo’s fourth president, Satoru Iwata from Japan, was Nintendo’s video designer and CEO from 2002 until he died in 2015.
One of his top quotes was: “For young players, classic games are brand new. For older players, they bring back memories and make you feel good.”
This reiterates the misconception that gaming is only meant for boys, as video games target everyone.
