New horror-thriller Weapons set for UK cinema release in August 2025

A new horror thriller titled Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger, is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on 8th August 2025, Warner Bros Pictures has confirmed. Set against the backdrop of a small community, the film explores the mysterious disappearance of all but one child from a single class, prompting uncertainty and suspicion as the search for explanations unfolds.
The film, which was officially announced by New Line Cinema, marks Cregger’s latest project following his work on Barbarian. Alongside Cregber at the helm, the cast lists several established names, including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.
According to the synopsis, Weapons centres around the unexplained vanishing of several children from the same classroom, all on the same night at precisely the same time. The story, described as a blend of horror and thriller elements, follows the impact of the incident on the local community as it grapples with both loss and paranoia.
The production also sees Cregger taking multiple roles, acting as director, screenwriter and producer. He is joined by producers Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with executive production from Michelle Morrissey and lead actor Brolin. The behind-the-scenes crew includes director of photography Larkin Seiple, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Joe Murphy and costume designer Trish Sommerville. The film’s score will be provided by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay and Cregger himself.
A trailer for Weapons has been released to coincide with the announcement of the release date, providing an initial glimpse of the film’s tense atmosphere and narrative direction.
A spokesperson for New Line Cinema said the story is “wholly original”, reflecting a push towards novel horror narratives in mainstream cinema. Those interested in Cregger’s previous work, as well as horror and thriller genres, may note the direction and cast involved.
