In the Valley Below at Scala
Last night, dreamy duo In the Valley Below supported Milo Greene at Scala.
The room had an intimate and relaxed feel, with a comfortable number of people contentedly sipping pints amid the sleepy green lighting, which shifted across the floor like a magic smoke, setting the perfect atmosphere for the slippery, seductive qualities of In the Valley Below’s infectious melodies.
The pairing, which consists of Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob, have a great presence onstage, wearing folky yet sultry expressions that well-suited their riddle inspired lyrics. They also included props such as a chain, which Angela shook in time with the rhythm of the track. Small things like this really helped animate a simple set, as well as giving a strong atmospheric quality to the music.
The disorientating quality to the music seemed to spiral over the audience in a crazed pallet of jumpy beats, synthy spirit and dark lyrics throughout. Often Angela would slowly circle Jeffrey, leaning in close and emphasising a sense of devilish desire.
The gig kept you on your toes: whenever the audience were lulled into a state of trance, the lively background instrumentals and percussion would snap them out of it. Jeffrey shouted “Stand up!” during the second track, which really diverted the direction of the music. Thus, the music is most interesting because of its morphing mood, which changes in energy and trails emotions down various avenues.
Overall the set was enjoyable, easily carrying the audience into an imaginative state via an ambience of floaty pop, merged with haunting spirits and a fascinating fumble of textured instrumentals. As In the Valley Below left the stage they also left behind a ringing musical aura, heightening the anticipation for Milo Greene.
