Trend Alert: Braid-al shower
The humble braid that kept your tresses in place during your childhood seems to have got a major facelift. With the runway and even the red carpet embracing this trend like never before it seems our old pigtails have become the new show-stopper, and it just takes few deliberate twists to give this classic a whole new appeal. Braids are also a sure way to inject some style on those sad bad hair days – need we say more? Here’s a list of our favourite braid styles.
The Herringbone braid, or the fish tail
Though this style looks quite complicated, once you’ve got the knack of it it’s extremely simple. Filled with oodles of va-va-voom factor, the style is guaranteed to make you look like a diva in an instant. We like Leona Lewis’s effortless style in this one.
The French braid
The French braid is the quintessential classic. While the traditional braid begins at the nape the French braid begins at the hairline. If you like experimenting try Sarah Michelle Gellar’s side French braid tied up in a messy up-do. Fun and contemporary, we say.
The wind-swept braid
A perfect marriage between the traditional braid and the out-of-bed look, this style is relaxed yet sophisticated. Scrunch your hair with a bit of mousse tie it loosely on the side. Look at Blake Lively for example.
The milkmaid braid
So you want to look like on those ethereal fictitious heroines? Perfect for spring this hairstyle looks great paired with a flowing summer dress. Simply divide your hair into two sections, part down the middle. Braid both the sections, pull one braid over to the opposite ear and secure with a bobby pins. Look at Sienna Miller for inspiration.
The ribbon braid
Take a cue from Hermès’ Spring 2011 show for this one. Add a dash of colour with ribbons and scarves into your braid by simply putting a scarf overhead and weaving it together with your hair. What better way to add some fun to your hairstyle?
The braided up-do
The braided up-do is for those who want elegance in a short time. Simply tie your hair as a high pony and part your hair into two, braid the sections and tie it as a bun. Heidi Klum shows you the way.
