Nelson Mandela’s family praying for “smooth transition” as he battles infection
Former South African president Nelson Mandela is in critical condition after being diagnosed with a severe lung infection and having deteriorated on Sunday following his admission over two weeks ago.
Makaziwe, Mandela’s eldest daughter from his first marriage, said the family are praying for a “smooth transition” and that he is “at peace”.
She added: “Nelson Mandela’s blood runs through these veins. Our veins. Give us the space to be with our father”.
Mandela’s only surviving daughter from his first marriage to Evelyn Mandela went on to say that his family were enjoying “sacred moments” with Mr Mandela, a man who has transformed South Africa for a lifetime.
Current president Jacob Zuma stated that “nothing” will stop Barack Obama from visiting, hence denying the rumour that the US president will cancel his visit to Mandela.
Mr Zuma visited Mr Mandela on Sunday night at the Pretoria-based hospital and claimed he had no interaction with the 94-year-old during his visit as Mr Mandela was asleep, although he spoke to his wife Graca.
“The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well-being and comfort,” said Mr Zuma and stated that everyone, including Mandela’s family, had faith in the doctors.
Meanwhile, Makaziwe asked for privacy as she told US broadcaster CNN that she “would expect the world to really back off” regarding her father’s condition.
The former president’s granddaughters, Swati Dlamini and Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, tweeted “he is our rock” in regards to Mandela, who led South Africa out of apartheid into democratic elections in 1994.
