London 2012: Six months to go

With six months to go until the games, the Olympic Village site has been handed over to the London Organising Committee (LoCog), who will get it ready for the visiting athletes.

The apartments in the village still have to be completed, but when they are, the site will be able to house 16,000 guests who will be arriving from 200 countries.

Locog chairman Seb Coe said that they had a huge task ahead of them to get the apartments ready:

“Athletes are at the heart of the London 2012 Games and our plans for the Olympic Village will provide them with a home-from-home as they prepare for one of the biggest sporting moments of their lives,” he said.

“With the Village now handed over we are starting the huge process to install essential facilities and services ready to welcome competitors from around the world in 6 months’ time.”

 After the Olympic Games has finished, it’s hoped that the site will provide 2,800 new homes for families.

Elsewhere, organisers have also revealed that the opening ceremony is going to be called the ‘Isles of Wonder’ and will depict a land, poisoned by industrial machinery being reclaimed and recovered.
