Frank’s Cafe reopens for the summer

Die-hard fans will vouch that Frank’s Cafe – a tarpaulin-covered wooden structure perched atop a multistory car park in Peckham – boasts the best views in London. And they wouldn’t be wrong. Now open until the end of September, Frank’s is the place to hang out for the summer.

You may have a bit of trouble finding it: down desolate streets and past decrepit buildings in the heart of the “up-and-coming” hipster haven of Peckham, the run-down, disused multistory car park is well hidden. The journey is all part of the fun and should not deter adventurers, just make sure you’ve got maps on your phone. Entering through a metal door round the back, or cyclists through the main car entrance, Frank’s pilgrims make their way round and up the levels. Frank’s resides at the top on level ten and there are a few attractions on the way. Bold Tendencies Sculpture Project (of which Frank’s is a feature) occupies the top few floors showcasing new art as well as a variety of events this summer, which are worth a look in if only to catch your breath en route.

Out in the open and up the final ramp – here comes the spectacular view across the city from the London Eye to the O2 arena and everything in between. Rough-cut wooden benches provide a crowded seating area, with others choosing to stand and lap up the cityscape. Beers, wine and cocktails (lots of Campari) can be sourced from the bar area, which is covered by a glaring red tarpaulin stretching over wooden beams, designed by Practice Architecture. A limited and changing menu of food can also be had during the evenings at a reasonable price. One of the most novel things about Frank’s is the toilets – wooden, wonderful views and no flush.

Now becoming increasingly popular, Frank’s is not an exclusive venue any more, with children and dogs welcome. This does mean that it will probably be busy with a new bar set up and a queuing system that has yet to be proven effective. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, the best time to come is late afternoon staying into the evening for food and a glorious sunset – weather dependent of course.
