Mohsin packs a punch for A/W ‘13
We were really intrigued by menswear designer Mohsin’s new autumn/winter collection. Since his graduation from the London College of Fashion in 1999, he has worked in Paris and Milan, but he’s largely kept under the radar, except to those in the know. This is set to change, however, since he is now to be stocked at Layers in Mayfair, his first UK outlet. And what a collection to start with!
Mohsin was inspired by his beloved Muay Thai, the national sport of Thailand. Essentially it’s elegant sportswear, but he manages to turn it into a shining example of the beauty of well-done menswear.
He plays with the idea of armouring oneself against an opponent, and combines this with attention to cut and detail.
All in a colour palette of grey, white and black, it includes softly tailored woollen jackets combined with contrasting yet subtle woollen leggings.
Long, bat-like belted capes in a gently shimmering fabric create a unique silhouette. Layered tops and shirts with differing fabrics, collars and sleeves are simple yet dramatic. All of these things give the wearer the ability to wrap himself up piece by piece.
Fingerless gloves, polo necks and cashmere shorts give off the boxing vibe that’s obvious to the eye, but the addition of modern tailoring brings it up a notch.
Traditional Thai-style embroidered prints in pale colours pop out at the viewer and have a tribal feeling about them, but they manage to be chic all the same.
Overall, a really strong collection: personal, functional and stylish, we can’t wait to see what Mohsin comes up with next!
