Girl Most Likely

Girl Most Likely stars Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Saturday Night Live) as Imogene, a New York career girl who is failing in every aspect of her life. After losing her job and her boyfriend in the same week, Imogene is forced to move back to New Jersey to live with her eccentric family and their handsome new lodger Lee, played by upcoming star Darren Criss.

The storyline of Girl Most Likely is predictable – it’s essentially the tale of a girl who tries to run away from her past, only to discover that there’s no place like home. Despite a stellar cast including Matt Dillon and June Diane Raphael, the story is let down by a few holes in the plot and loose ends which aren’t tied up.

The audience are first introduced to Imogene as an ambitious little girl and then as a failed 30-something, which leaves them wondering exactly where, and why, she lost her way in life. It’s small issues such as this that sadly stop the audience really understanding the characters’ motivations in this film.

Its sitcom feel clearly takes some inspiration from the likes of Friends, Bridget Jones Diary and Bridesmaids, however the humour isn’t quite on a par with these wittier classics. The standard of acting, however, is high. Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right, The Sopranos) is particularly convincing as Imogene’s compulsive yet lovable mother, and Christopher Fitzgerald (Dedication) is hilarious as her mollusc-obsessed brother, Ralph. 

Girl Most Likely might not be the most gripping film in its genre, but as a comedy drama it’s certainly enjoyable. The film features a catchy soundtrack including the likes of Blondie, and despite plenty of mishaps and misery for Imogene along the way, its conclusion is upbeat and heartwarming. 

Girl Most Likely can be recommended to anyone looking for amusing, easy viewing with a few light-hearted laughs.
