Karen David at St Pancras Old Church
Whether you’re a fan of her music or not, it’s impossible not to smile in the presence of the sunny, vivacious Karen David as she radiates joy from the candlelit altar of the St Pancras Old Church. David celebrates the launch of her latest EP, Dust to Stars, with a small, but fiercely devoted group of fans, many of whom she owes to none other than modern-day teenage deities One Direction. Liam Payne tweeted a link to David’s video for the single Daydreamer, hence transferring a legion of his own die-hard fans to David herself. Her teen Twitter following is well represented at the EP launch with rows of excitable teenage girls giggling and tweeting their way through the show.
Gracing the stage in the cheery yellow dress from her Daydreamer video (much to the approval of her Twitter followers in the audience) David opens with Connected, a bubbly, upbeat track that sets the theme for the rest of the EP. Following with Heartstrings, David exposes herself as a blissfully besotted newlywed and lovingly dedicates the track to her husband in the audience. Unapologetically full of love and desperate to share it, even the most cynical audience members can’t help but return her euphoric smile.
With only six tracks to share, David breaks up the evening with a live Q&A session hosted by her friend and actor Ameet Chana. She gives an insight into the inspiration behind the EP and her career as an actress, with a few personal anecdotes thrown in about her more cringe-worthy roles that propel her younger fans into fits of giggles. Albeit a little self-indulgent, the near 20-minute-long interview easily pleases her already smitten fans.
Kaleidoscope is perhaps the least polished track in the collection, with slightly unimaginative, if not cheesy lyrics set to a melody that fails to fully showcase David’s beautiful voice. This is redeemed by the much awaited Daydreamer, which really sells as an acoustic track. Fans dance in their seats and sing along, mimicking David’s infectious joy and sunny disposition. This continues with Superheroes, another of David’s Twitter success stories hand-picked by her fans and followers as a crowd favourite.
Dust to Stars is undeniably a positive and promising step forward for David, who deserves the utmost credit for her unwavering dedication to her devoted fan base.
