Madame Gautier Bistro

Madame Gautier Bistro
Madame Gautier Bistro | Restaurant review

Foodies and Francophiles alike are in gastronomic heaven at the much anticipated launch of Madame Gautier Bistro in Kensal Rise. Guests are lavishly spoilt with delicious hors d’oeuvres, free-flowing bubbly and an A-list visit from the impossibly lovely Thandie Newton. The bistro has opened as an extension of renowned chef and entrepreneur Mark Gautier’s well-loved market stalls, cooking school and shop/traiteur in Barnes, and brings a  sense of French glamour and exclusivity to Chamberlayne Road.

The aroma of confit beef wafts past the rustic, exposed brick walls as mutterings of French can be heard from the waiting staff, chefs and guests alike. Authenticity is rife as Gautier further proves his well-earned reputation with a unique, inspired menu based on the values of traditional French cuisine made from fresh, seasonal produce. The French-style bar à vin offers a surprisingly reasonably priced wine selection, and the mostly French bartenders create a buzzing, Parisian atmosphere.

The Confit of Beef is the clear favourite as Gautier himself cooks and serves tiny portions of the 14-hour slow-cooked dish with red wine and Dijon mustard on a bed of creamy mashed potato. The open kitchen and “get it while it’s hot” attitude help to relax the otherwise exclusive vibe, as guests get a chance to chat with Gautier and see the master at work. Tiny offerings of Celeri Remoulade (grated celeriac salad with Dijon mustard dressing) and Carottes Râpées (grated carrot salad with garlic and parsley vinaigrette) are refreshing and satisfying in their classic, “no frills’ simplicity.

While there’s no doubt Madame Gautier Bistro will be a favourite new hot spot, the attached cookery school, La Technique, is sure to have a rise in attendees as guests attempt to recreate some of the divine menu choices. Salade Madame Gautier (pan fried chicken livers, parsley, garlic and raspberry vinaigrette), perhaps?

Madame Gautier offers a deliciously authentic French experience. Très chic!
