NYFW S/S’14 – Malan Breton collection: British-punk romantic invasion

Bright colours and interesting prints were the theme of Malan Breton’s Sprint 2014 formal wear collection.

Yujin Kim serenaded the room and we were transmitted to a different element and a dramatic energy when Breton’s show started. Breton mentioned being fascinated by the mixing of fashion, music and film, and that’s why he chose Kim to open the show.

Tailored menswear, printed ankle pants and various pieces in leather were key elements of this collection. The British-rock invasion was the inspiration for the women’s teased hair and billowy, voluminous gowns, as well as their menswear pieces. The modernised take on classics were refreshing and the bright colours weren’t as harsh to the eye as they could have been, given the inspiration. The women looked just as sharp as the men in their suits, and overall the show was buzzing with a playful atmosphere and the designer’s vision of romance and rock’n’roll came alive!

The designer also mentioned 60s and 70s pop being a theme in his collection, and that could definitely be seen in everything from the make-up to the fabric choices, which by the way, came from his travels in Asia and Europe. As an advocate for women and curves, the pieces created lovely hourglass shapes on the models and played up their bust, which was a subtle yet important move for the designer.
