Bold and Brilliant – David David, London

David Saunders, 35-year-old creator of London based David David, came in the fashion industry by accident. As an artist, and before establishing himself in the world of fashion, David made something and somebody liked it. He made some more, and more people liked it. With the help of the process repeating itself, he found himself where he is today. David still classes himself as an artist; he’s just playing in a few other fields too.

The label is bold and quite frankly brilliant. Hosting bright colours, horizontal lines and triangle prints, David draws inspiration through a process. By starting in familiar territory of things he likes, such as Japanese and Islamic prints, he takes ideas from those then re-scales, re-draws and re-animates. This development of a print reappears as something which he then works onto an item.

His process so far has worked. From both men’s and women’s pieces, to a whole host of accessories, David’s shape prints are both aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching. The range of loose fit T-shirt dresses (£89.00) even draws some resemblance to an Aztec theme, which is current in this season’s collections.

We absolutely love the printed cashmere scarves, and despite being slightly over-priced at £149.00, they would make a perfect accompaniment to your spring coat. Oh, and since it’s getting closer to the time of April showers, we can’t forget David’s printed umbrellas (£85.00) which would make you stand out on a dull and rainy day.

David’s creativity doesn’t stop there though. He has designed a print for a chair which is now for sale at £1,500. Extremely pricey we know, but when you look at the design, you can’t help picturing it in every room of your home. 

When we asked David what made him throw furniture into the mix, he responded with: ‘Furniture has longevity, and a constant purpose, and is positioned in a person life so that it is allowed to be appreciated more frequently. I like the idea that a product will become “part of the furniture”.  If you can be truly comfortable with something, then it has served its purpose. It is attractive, functional and part of the family. It is a feature on show, rather than in a closet. In that sense it is somewhat closer to art, which I like.’
